In the late twentieth century, an art historian was asked for help by the estate managers of a British university. It had a large number of contemporary sculptures installed outdoors on its campus; she was asked to develop a rich and engaging information resource about the the artworks. She asked if this was to be material for a catalogue of the collection, or for a telly programme or something. There were no websites then. She was told: no, students are coming back pissed to their halls of residence and vandalising the sculptures on the way. Some of the artworks were valuable. She was told: we want the students to understand what they mean and so to come to care about them enough to not damage them.
